Gospel  Mt 28:16-20

The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. When they all saw him, they worshiped (1), but they doubted. Then Jesus approached and said to them, "All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age."

The difficult words

(1) To worship is to love God and to pray to him.

This week’s spotlight

The Holy Trinity

Jesus is the only Son of God. His Father is our Father. Jesus promised to give us the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, to help us learn to know and love the Father through him and with him. The Holy Spirit also teaches us how to share that love with others. The love that is in us comes from God because God himself is love. The Father loves the Son; the Son loves the Father; and the Holy Spirit, in this communion of love, gives us the strength to love as they love each other; in spite of our weaknesses.

The mystery of the Trinity

Has anyone ever shared a secret with you? When someone tells you something very private about themselves, it is a sign of their trust and love for you. This is just what God does by revealing to us that he is a Trinity of Persons — Father; Son, and Holy Spirit. We could never figure this out on our own, but God shares this amazing truth about himself so that we can know and love him more deeply. TheTrinity is a “mystery" of our faith - something we believe in without totally understanding it, because we trust God who reveals it to us. We will understand this mystery more perfectly in heaven, when we see God face-to-face.

Reflection

A mystery...

At Mass, the priest welcomes us with: “The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” In God, three Persons have for ever loved each other perfectly. First, the almighty Father, creator of the visible and invisible universe; then his only Son, true God and true man, come from heaven to save us; and the third, the Holy Spirit, who is God, who gives us life - the breath of God. Thanks to Jesus, our human intelligence can better understand the mystery of the Holy Trinity: a single God in three Persons. We can discover this mystery more and more each day through prayer, through the Mass, through religion classes... If you can love as God loves, your face will shine with the mysterious presence of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, who each dwell inside of you.

Discussion questions

1. Where did the disciples meet Jesus?
2. Who was given all power in heaven and on earth?
3. What did Jesus entrust the disciples to do?
4. Who will be with the disciples while they are doing God’s command?

Praying after Communion

After receiving Holy Communion, you can say this prayer silently to yourself. If you have not yet received your First Communion, you can still say this prayer because of your desire to receive Jesus.

Father, through Jesus, in communion with the whole Church, I thank you for coming into my heart. Father; through Jesus, in union with the whole Church, I thank you for coming into my heart. O Lord, you love us so tenderly. Help us to receive communion like a gift which gives us life and nourishes us. Breathe your Holy Spirit into us so that we can better understand the mystery of your Holy Trinity and be able to talk about it with our friends.
